Ilula
Lutheran Health Center
In the remote rural area of Ilula in the
Iringa Diocese, the only health facility is the Ilula
Lutheran Heath Center. The urgent needs for care and
services stretch the financial resources of the center.
A group of individuals and congregations in this synod
has been working on a five-year plan to upgrade the
health center to a hospital. If the center receives
approval as a hospital, it can apply for
district-designated status from the government, making
it eligible for staff salary support, pharmaceuticals,
and other funding. A surgical ward was recently
completed as part of the plan. The next phase includes
the construction of a radiology suite and the remodeling
of existing wards. Our gift of $150,000 will enable the
completion of the next phase of the upgrade.
Institute of
Agriculture, Tumaini University
Tumaini University is ready to establish
an agricultural training center at three farm sites in
the district of Iringa. Some 80 percent of the
population in Iringa engages in farming. Increased
agricultural production—made possible by teaching how to
replace soil nutrients and improve soil structure using
tools and resources currently available—will lead to
significant improvement in the lives of many by moving
agriculture beyond subsistence level. Our gift of
$75,000 will provide staffing, facilities, and supplies
and enable the institute to become self-sustaining in
three years.
Scholarships for Students and Teachers, Tumaini
University at Iringa
Evangelism efforts in the Iringa Diocese
have increased church growth at a rate of more than 10
percent annually, resulting in a shortage of trained
leaders. Our gift of $75,000 will help to alleviate this
shortage by providing pastoral leadership development at
Tumaini University at Iringa, both in the diploma and
the Bachelor of Theology programs.
